CHECK
THE LOCKS-
- Make
sure all doors have a dead bolt lock.
Key-knob locks are not enough.
- Secure
all sliding glass doors. Install a
commercially-available lock, or use a
broomstick or pipe to jam the door.
- Don't
hide keys around the outside of the
house. Instead, give one to a neighbor
for good use.
- Anytime
you move into a new house, always change
the locks!
CHECK
THE DOORS-
- Outside
doors should be metal or wood.
- Weather
stripping should be installed around
doors that do not fit tightly within
their frames.
- Peepholes
or wide angle viewers should be installed
on all entry doors to your home.
CHECK
THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME-
- Install
bright outside lights and keep them on at
night.
- Keep
your yard clean. Cut back all branches
that may give a thief easy-access to an
upper level window or entrance.
- If
traveling out of town, use timers to
allow different lights to go on and off
at different times of the day to create
the illusion that you are home.
- Make a
complete list of all valuables incase a
robbery does take place.
OTHER
THINGS TO REMEMBER-
- Alarms
are a major preventive measure for
possible robbers looking to invade your
house. If you have an alarm present, make
sure it is known that an alarm is active
by placing the company's logo on your
window.
- If you
approach your home and things look
questionable, do not enter. If you
surprise a robber, he/she may assault or
rape you. Call the police from a
neighbor's home or a public phone.
- Joining
neighborhood watch programs can create a
more satisfying feeling among you and
your community for safety.
